I returned from TechEd ITPro last night, after a very long and interesting week. Quite a few amazing sessions with Steve Riley, Mark Minasi, Jesper Johansson, Mark Russinovich and many others. Lots of interaction in the “Ask the Experts” area, and plenty of new business opportunities as well.
All in all, the event was a pretty good one. Well, maybe except from the food. But that’s usually a general thing, since I’m a vegetarian. On two of my four flights this past week, the airline (TAROM) apparently “forgot” my previously confirmed request for a vegetarian meal. Even more so, when they brought the food (which was all with meat), I asked them what they can provide instead of that, and I was just told “we’re sorry sir, but we can’t really give you anything else – we’re not vegetarian ourselves!”. I mean, WHAT?!
They did have vegetarian meals at the conference, but I believe people fail to grasp the concept of being a vegetarian. They probably think salads contain enough nutrients, or that they can provide the needed vegetal proteins. But food-related things aside, the conference was a real success in my view.
I have no regret whatsoever as far as the sessions I chose to attend go (we’ll get all the others on a DVD anyway). Most of them were sessions which are a must-see, such as “Do these ten things now or else get 0wn3d!”, “Virtualization and Security: what does it mean for me?”, “How IT will change in the next 10 years and why should I care?”, “Privacy: the why, what and how”, “Q&A – Privacy, to be or not to be”, “It’s the 21st century: time to throw away your medieval gateways”, “The fine art of security panacea, achievable or not?”, “Naked dancing pigs and Werner Heisenberg: how security changes everything”, “The case of the unexplained”, “Anatomy of a hack” and several others, the ones here coming from the speakers I mentioned above.
I didn’t get much time to visit Barcelona, so I don’t have that many pictures. Even so, as soon as I sort them out, I’ll upload them online. I’ve sorted them a bit, so here they are.
The hotel was ok, the main quality being its central location. And again, thanks to Microsoft Romania for providing some very fun and interesting evening meetings all week long!
I’m now looking forward to my white hat hacking lab starting this weekend, since I see that the things are getting pretty hot already by just reading the comments…

Following last week’s ITBoard community meeting, a new event is announced for tomorrow at the Babes-Bolyai University in Cluj: the opening of the Microsoft Center. The target audience is clearly different, but an interesting and fun one nonetheless.
That’s where I’ll also be announcing my White Hat Hacking lab, due to start in November, after I return from Barcelona (TechEd).

Yes! Thanks to Microsoft Romania, I have been given the opportunity of attending this year’s IT Professionals conference at TechEd in Barcelona. I’ll be in Barcelona during November 3rd – November 7th November 10th (apparently, I’ll also be attending an invite-only User Groups conference taking place in between the two TechEd events), staying at the Duques de Bergara Hotel, somewhere really close to the world-famous “La Rambla” (and actually not really that far from the International Convention Center in Barcelona, where the TechEd event takes place).
There’s lots of interesting speakers, so it should be fun!

I’ve been extremely busy during the last week. I’ve started to write a longer review of my trip to TechEd-Developers in Barcelona, and I’ll post it as soon as it’s done. For now, here’s a set of pictures I took while being there.

We recently got back from TechEd. I’m in Bucharest right now, I’ll be back in Cluj tomorrow morning, and I’ll start blogging about how it was. I’ve also got quite a few pictures (most of them are online, but I still need to sort them a bit). For now, I have one more day to spend around Bucharest, and then I’ll be going home.
Until then, here’s something to keep you busy for a while: Microsoft Live Labs – Photosynth (quite an amazing thing from Microsoft Research)…

To keep this short: Vista reached RTM yesterday, and was sent to manufacturing. Jim Allchin even blogged this on the Windows Vista Blog, and Paul Thurott already has RTM screenshots on his site…

As I already mentioned in a previous post, I’ve received an invitation and will be attending the TechEd-Developers sessions in Barcelona next month, along with 6 other Microsoft Student Partners from Romania. As far as we know, there will be more than 200 Student Partners, Imagine Cup Students, Lecturers and ADEs attending this year’s edition of Tech.Ed Developers. Apparently, there will even be a private Student Partners event on November 9th. Sounds exciting!
There is also a blogging competition taking place, which requires us (Microsoft Student Partners) to have our blog listed in the Academics Section on the Virtual Side, and to post content and pictures about our experiences there in our personal blogs. At the time of this post, I had already submitted my blog, but it wasn’t listed yet. I’ll also look forward to seeing Ciprian Jichici there, since he will be holding two sessions at TechEd:
I’ll come back with another post on this topic before actually leaving for Barcelona if any new information comes up.
